We’re so excited about Marshmallow, our new DK weight yarn, and we can’t stop daydreaming about what to make next! There’s no way we’ll ever get through every project on our to-do list, so we’ve gathered some of our favorite DK weight yarn knitting patterns (and crochet patterns, too!), to inspire you to create something special with Marshmallow, too.
Jennifer Berg’s Shik’is Headband celebrates her Navajo heritage with a striking geometric pattern meant to be knitted quickly as a warm gift for a friend. Jennifer chose the name “Shik’is” — which means “my friend” in Navajo — because her headband is a simple design meant to be knitted up quickly for a gift. “I wear my hair in a bun most days and I needed an option to keep my ears warm on runs,” she said. “The shik’is headband is an easy solution with some style added in.”
The Dot dot dot Beanie by Nomad Stitches looks equally lovely great knit up in bare yarn or variegated hand-dyed yarn! The raised dots give this hat a fun texture that makes it irresistible for kids. Sandra Gutierrez, the designer behind Nomad Stitches, has created her beanie pattern in nine sizes, so you could knit up matching beanies for the whole family.
Another beautiful hat option is the Pangloss, designed by Noriko Ho of Norichan Knits. Named after the philosopher Pangloss from Candide, the pattern features subtle geometric elements, which add interest to the overall design. Complete the look with her matching Martin Gloves, to keep toasty warm (and stylish).
Caleisha Ryan’s Just Feel Festive Shawl is a great project for using up minis or leftovers from other projects. Each stripe is crocheted on the bias, so the design is a dynamic diagonal pattern. Caleisha’s Puppy Love Shawl pattern also uses DK, and the chevron pattern comes together easily using the crochet form of brioche. Can you imagine this project knitted up in hand-dyed Marshmallow DK yarn?
The Summer Dreams Top from Designs By Key is crocheted in an open, lacy style — a fun piece to layer over a spring or summer outfit. Key calls her design, “A fun and flirty crochet top, perfect for the warm summer days and cool summer nights.” The delicate details in the crochet pattern drape beautifully, highlighting the beauty of the yarn.
The classic Share Sweater designed by Eri Shimizu is a raglan yoke sweater worked from the top down with twisted rib borders. Thanks to the stretchy rib stitch used throughout, the sweater is adaptable, and great for sharing with a roommate or romantic partner (even if they have a different body type).
Natalia McHayle’s Hexi Sweater would look beautiful crocheted in Marshmallow, undyed or dyed! This delicate V-neck sweater design features contrasting geometric lace clusters and set in sleeves for a professional look that is accessible to intermediate level crocheters. Natalia calls this sweater pattern, “A delight for the adventurous crocheter who is looking to expand their skill in garment construction.”
Yumiko Alexander’s airy Oasis poncho is made by knitting one piece of fabric, then grafting one edge and seaming another to create a neck opening and one armhole. This intermediate design looks beautiful knit with a single strand of DK, or held together with a strand of Light Fingering weight yarn for added texture and bulk.
The elegant Roving Summer Top by Irene Lin is a great piece for wearing in warmer seasons. Light and breezy for the summer months, this top features beautifully delicate pattern details. A pretty, breezy top that looks sophisticated knit in any color.
The Floral Dreams blanket by The Loopy Stitch has a wonderfully tactile quality — the floral motifs give this crocheted blanket a 3-dimensional look that is very appealing. While you’ll need a fair bit of yarn to complete this project, the floral elements could easily be stitched up using yarn leftover from other projects, or random hanks in your stash. This project explores multiple crochet stitches and techniques, and makes a fun project for an advanced beginner.
Amanda Berry offers dozens of adorable patterns for stuffed animals and knitted toys via Ravelry, including cars, fruits and vegetables, and even a helicopter! My favorite is Pax the Alpaca, whose mini knitted scarf charmed me instantly.
Mystic Comfort Pillow by Nice and Knit features beautiful winding cables, a cozy addition to your sofa. The back of the pillow is constructed with two panels and button enclosures, so the cover can be removed for cleaning as needed. Another easy project that would look beautiful in hand-dyed or undyed DK yarn.
