How to Dye Marshmallow Worsted Select Emerald Green
Knomad has released several new yarns just in time for Fall! One of my favorites is the new Marshmallow Worsted Select. Made from super soft merino, this new yarn is noticeably softer than our original Marshmallow Worsted yarn, but it has all the same elasticity and beautiful cabled construction.
I love to make beanies out of this yarn, especially with ribs or cables. This yarn is spun with a good amount of spring, so areas of a garment where you need stretch, like necklines and cuffs, hold their shape really well when you use Marshmallow Worsted Select.
Just like our original Marshmallow yarns, the Select versions are superwash as well. Bring your finest speckles and brightest colors when you dye with Marshmallow. They absolutely shine on this yarn! The superwash process makes the yarn take the dye well and makes it easy to care for, which we all love.
I’m dying up a rich emerald green that reminds me of a witch’s brew. Spooky!
Using gloved hands, remove the skeins from the soaking liquid, gently squeezing the excess liquid out of the yarn. You want the yarn to be slightly damp, but not sopping wet.
Place the skeins side by side in your pan or dye pot.
Using gloved hands or the back of a spoon, gently work the yarn so the dye covers it evenly, with no bare spots on the yarn. Take your time with this and make sure the yarn is completely saturated with dye.
Place the lid on the pan and heat on low for 20 minutes.
Check to make sure all the dye was absorbed before turning off the heat.
If it hasn’t absorbed completely, give it another 5 minutes.
Allow the yarn to cool with the lid on.
Rinse and dry the yarn as you normally would.

MATERIALS
- 2 skeins of Knomad MARSHMALLOW WORSTED SELECT yarn – 100% superwash merino wool
- Dharma Trading co acid dye for silk and wool. I used the color EMERALD GREEN
- Gram scale
- 1 large cup to mix liquid dye in. I like to use a mason jar or pyrex measuring cup.
- Citric acid powder
- Your regular set up for heat setting yarn
- A spoon
- Gloves
- Optional: two zip ties
SOAK THE YARN
Loop a zip tie around the skein of yarn, if you are using them. Soak the yarn in lukewarm water for about 1 hour. Meanwhile, prepare your dye.
MIX AND MEASURE THE DYE
Make sure to always protect yourself with gloves and a respirator whenever you work with dye in its powder form. A dust or surgical mask is not enough protection to safely work with dye powder! Into one large cup, measure 8 grams EMERALD GREEN dye powder. Add1 teaspoon of citric acid powder and top with hot water (about two cups or enough to dissolve the dye). Stir to dissolve.DYE THE YARN
