How Bare Yarn is Made: Carding and Combing
Next up in our behind the scenes at our mill video series, get to know the carding and combing process! This process is a vital step in making bare yarn. Once the fibre is washed, or scoured, it moves on to the carding and combing machines. The carding and coming process is essentially a series of small brushes that comb the fibres like a hair brush. Since the fibres that go into KNOMAD yarns are so tiny, they need to go through several rounds of carding and combing before they are ready to move on to the next step, the spinning process. After the fibre has completed the carding and combing process, all the fibres are perfectly combed and parallel. Fibre at this stage in the process is called a top or a bump.
