The Fine Points of Bristle

The unique blend Bristle has been one of our most popular yarns since we launched. A gorgeous blend of 70% organic merino wool and 30% hemp, Bristle appears to be a simple, rustic two ply yarn, in its raw state. Once the yarn is dyed, its magic emerges.

The Fine Points of Bristle

A quick dip in a dye bath brings out the true beauty of Bristle. Wool fibres are coaxed to take color quickly with water, heat and a splash of acid. Hemp, however, is not convinced as easily! Unlike wool, hemp is derived from plants. Because it is made up of cellulose, not protein, hemp requires a different dye activator to take on color. The hemp in the blend does not achieve the same color results as the wool.

The Fine Points of Bristle

What this means for the dyer is a beautiful heather appearance, with minimal effort. The organic, hay like texture of the hemp beautifully contrasts with the colorful wool. This sought after heather look is not easily achievable by hand dyeing. Dyeing already feels like brewing up a pot of magic. Dyeing with Bristle feels like pure sorcery!

The Fine Points of Bristle

Knitters love the homespun look of Bristle. The blend of hemp and wool has a dry hand that is not too warm, making it perfect for light garments for warmer weather. Full of natural charm, Bristle brings a gorgeous, tweedy look to any project.
